The Shrewd Manager Luke 16:1-13

22-9-19

Sunday’s lectionary text is not only one of the most striking in all of the Gospels, it is one that is difficult to unravel. Christians are not immune to the many and often even immoral methods of getting along in the world. There is no doubt that this parable in Luke’s Gospel has relevant implications for the contemporary society. The parable talks of stewardship as faithfulness in managing entrusted resources. The steward is expected to be faithful to the master.

The faithfulness that Jesus praised here is the use of wealth to lead others into freedom from slavery through debt relief. And indeed, debt like wealth, comes in many forms. All Christians can be called to use their wealth (gifts) to pursue the goal of Jesus on earth, bringing the good news to the poor and the release of the captives and the oppressed. Unlike the Pharisees who have misused their position to gain wealth and power, Christians are to engage their wealth for the glory of God. Unlike the steward whose action of debt release was tainted by a selfish motive, the provision of a future for himself, every action of true disciples must be marked by selflessness.

Christians cannot become a servant to wealth and remain a servant to Jesus Christ. We know how our wealth and prosperity can lead to greed or corruption, or to improving the life of others. As with all we have, all is God’s gift and to be used for the common good.
