United for One Purpose

1 Corinthians 1:10-18

As we journey into Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, somehow it reminded me of a number of bakers gathered together to create a chocolate recipe. Among these people there were different opinions and political views, different ways of looking at the world and even different moral values. They even have different ideas as to what makes the perfect chocolate cake. Yet they are united for one purpose, and within that purpose there are fundamentals that remain the same. There are certain basic ingredients needed, ingredients that can create a recipe that can change lives.

Paul writes to the church at Corinth where division appears to be looming on the horizon. He reminds them to take their focus back to what is foundational as Christians, as to being church in Corinth. That what matters most is that they have unity in Christ and a shared identity as baptised and beloved children of God. United by baptism in Christ, and in the communion, they are unified by Jesus’ love. And it is a love that makes all the difference in the world.

Paul’s words can also be a light for us for today, reminding us of to whom we belong, in whom we are unified, and through whom we are blessed in order to bless others.
