Forgiveness is an invisible act, but it is real.
John 14:15-21
We live in a world where seeing is believing. Even in relation to the Covid-29 virus we are bombarded with images of what it looks like, not that that will help you if you contract it. It is not enough to just know that something
exists. We humans like to be shown.
Jesus had the same problem with his miracles. Remember the healing of the man lowered down through the roof (Mark 2:9). Jesus asks the Jewish leaders: “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Rise, take up your bed and walk?” Forgiveness is an invisible act, but it is real. Jesus healed the man visibly to prove that his invisible act of forgiving sins was also effective. In today’s John 14 text, Jesus says, “If
you love me keep my commands.” Jesus set the example of love between Father and the Son and between the Son and his followers. Just because you have an example doesn’t mean that you can follow it.
We need a means, an advocate, or helper. Jesus provided the power to love in the Holy Spirit, the advocate, whom he has given to us. And yet we don’t see the Holy Spirit, but we know his presence, because the Holy Spirit brings us God’s love. In fact, the Spirit and God’s love are so intertwined that the gift of God’s Spirit is a gift of his love. When we love others, we follow the prompting of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit speaks directly to love: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Look in the mirror. What do you see? I’m sure you will see the Spirit working in you.
