‘You should follow in His steps’

1 Peter 2:18-25

This week we continue to hear what the Apostle Peter has to say regarding submission at the workplace wherever that may be. This all begins in verse 13 with Peter saying: “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men.” (NIV). And now here in verse 18 Peter addresses a certain kind of submission. “Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle, but also those who are harsh.”

This is one of those parts of the Bible that we may no want to obey. We may not like what is says and so feel a little apprehensive about applying it. “I don’t mind submitting to perhaps good people, but to submit to the other kind, I have every right not to submit.” If you think about it there was a time when the author of this text was in agreement with that. Remember when they came to arrest Jesus, Peter was ready for a fight. Peter showed little respect for those in authority. And now something has changed his mind. Verses 18-20 explain Peter’s rationale, but verse 21 explains Peter’s change. Peter says what Christ did for him on the cross. “To this you were called because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.”

Jesus is the ultimate example of someone who endured under suffering while doing good. Jesus Christ changed Peter’s perspective, has it changed yours?
