Your True Identity

Exodus 19:1-8a
Identity – How do we see ourselves? Where does my identity come from? Do I look inside myself in order to bestow honour, dignity upon myself, or is it given, bestowed on me? We look at our dreams and decide what
we want to do, who we want to be and the self-assert these ideas. Often our formed identity runs contrary to society or even family. However, if your identity is based on your inner self worth or feelings, these tend to change with time, because they are relative to the things we choose. We see ourselves differently now from how we viewed ourselves in the past. Although we like to think that it is our maturing or our performance that alters this, it is from the culture and what it says that choices come. And as we know, these are not stable. If your identity has to be achieved rather than received, it will never offer your true self-worth. You cannot name nor bless yourself.

Before the Israelites left Egypt their identity was of Hebrew speaking slaves. They themselves had no way of altering that identity. Their choices were limited. Looking at those around them, didn’t make them feel terribly good about themselves. But God gave them identity. This identity is based on nothing that they themselves have achieved.

God’s gift in Jesus Christ is your identity. There is nothing you have to achieve. Jesus has done it all for you. Your culture does not determine who you are, Jesus does. He has named you, loves you and died for you. Your identity is in him. Look to him.
