God’s grace – a wonderful gift

Matthew 25: 14-30

The parable of the talents or bags of gold (Matt. 25:14-30) can be read as something like ‘you had better go and do something with those gifts God has given you or else God won’t be happy with you!’

I expect that the minute that you read this parable that somehow you will put you in there, maybe as a reflection of your life. But is that the right way to understand the message? The parable is not so much about the servants as it is about the master, a very generous master indeed. Often, we concentrate too much on the us and too little on the master who gives most generously according to our ability to receive.

The most valuable thing Jesus has given us is the good news of his grace. Jesus’ grace is a lot more than just forgiveness so we can get to heaven. The grace Jesus gives to us includes everything we need for this life as well as the next. The master merely asks that you be faithful (full of faith) with that grace you are given.
