A Second Chance
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
The Old Testament contains numerous wonderful stories, written not just to be told to children at bedtime, but stories that contain some very important truths for all generations. One such episode is the Book of Jonah.
You may think that the story is about the redemption of the evil city Nineveh by the prophet Jonah. Yes, Jonah is a prophet of the Lord, but Jonah is all about Jonah. Yes, Jonah reveres God, but Jonah thinks that he knows how God ought to act. When things don’t go the way they ought according to Jonah, then Jonah suffers a meltdown. In fact, what God does is exactly the opposite to how it ought to be. But God is patient and long suffering. He is in control of every situation even though we may not understand how.
The story is really about relationship, in particular God’s relationship with people and how he acts and how he gives second chances even when we don’t deserve them. He did it through Christ and continues to do so daily to us in our lives. It pays to listen to him. This Sunday we will delve more deeply into the story of Jonah.
